Hey Drew‍, we’re back and stronger than ever for the January 2021 season! If you haven’t done so yet, please register your team for the upcoming season here.

Please continue to promote to your players our Healthy Back to Hockey guidelines here.

Teams in Division 5 can expect changes for the upcoming Winter / January 2021 Season. All current D5C team captains will be contacted directly and involved in these changes (be it adjusting to a D5B level or working with CAHL for individual player skills etc)…

We will be enforcing Division 5 C to be exclusively for beginner-level and new skaters only. CAHL will be granting referees discretion to enforce this based on observations. Anyone playing in D5C with observable skills that stand out from the rest of the players will be asked to immediately leave and likely banned from D5C if such a strong infraction is observed. The actual wording, actions, rules, types of skills / behaviors and/or actions that might trigger a player being asked to play in a more advanced division are in the works by Tommy, referees and team captains.

This was written by Drew as a general heads-up and not in any way to be considered a written change at this time. We have a lot of new players joining us every season and those of us who really are in the beginners-level where any player that comes “down” to play can skate circles or score hat tricks often. It will be hard to say what exactly qualifies as a D5B level behavior but players must understand that more often than we wish to admit, there’s a player or two that can ruin the fun of the game if they don’t “back down” on their skills when playing for a D5C team?

Put yourself in a new player’s skates today, it’s scary enough to try this awesome sport the first time, let’s work together to bring those new players into the leagues and want to keep playing this awesome sport and those who are upset at me writing this, go do your thing at open hockey if you need to. This isn’t pro hockey and we’re all here to primarily HAVE FUN!

-Drew

New Guidelines

We will be opening up the leagues starting on May 26th. There will be some safety precautions that come with us opening. First thing, all players will take a forehead temperature when entering the building to ensure there is no fever of any kind. Secondly, all players and spectators must sign a sheet when entering the building so we know who is in the establishment at all times. Additionally, all players will have to wear a face mask when in the locker room; however, it is optional when you are on the ice underneath your helmets.

Locker rooms will seat nine players max. Additional players will dress in the party rooms at Northland. At Sports Plus floors will be marked and benches will be put down in showers to ensure distance while changing.

NO SHOWERS OR BATHROOMS will be open in locker rooms.

Playoffs

Playoffs will open up on June 3. Playoffs will be played over a one (1) week period. Most games, will be played on the weekend.

It will be like going away to play in a tournament. You will need to pay attention to your games day and time. Due to a busy Saturday and Sunday game schedule all games will have 17:00 minute periods and one 3 minute overtime period of 3 on 3 going to a 3 person shootout in all tied games.

Summer 2020 Season

The new season will start the week of June 12 and we will need all teams interested in playing to sign up as quick as possible. Scheduling this season will be challenging to say the least but we should be able to get a full session in. Please sign up on the website here.

I would like to thank everyone for your understanding and patience with this season.

GOOD LUCK IN THE PLAYOFFS!

TOMMY

The intent and nature of this league is to provide a fun, relaxed “back yard” open-hockey style of play in the form of pond hockey (also known as “Shinny”). Games are self-officiated and respect for all players is of the upmost paramount in this setting. Participants who are not playing in accordance to this philosophy will be asked to leave the ice surface immediately and will not be permitted to return to the league.

RULES

1. The Visiting Team will determine which goal to defend. Teams will switch goals after first half. Games will begin with a
3-tap faceoff at center ice (the opposing players will tap each other’s stick three times, above the puck, prior to battling for
possession). Teams comprise of 3 players for each team (no goalie) on the ice at one time.
2. No on-ice officials will be provided due to the nature of the “pond hockey” element of back yard play. However, an office game monitor will be provided to assist teams (scoring, time keeping, and shall act as an arbiter of major infractions).
Game start time, halftime and the end time will be kept by the off-ice game monitor and signaled by a whistle.
3. Icing and off-sides will not be in effect at any time during games.
4. All teams must have light and dark jerseys or uniforms available at all times. Home teams will wear dark.
5. All players must wear helmets and hockey skates. Other protective equipment is optional but recommended.
6. Minor Penalties: By nature of the game, Pond Hockey operates on a “self-penalization” standard. By observation, any
minor fouls (tripping, slashing, hooking, inadvertent body contact, etc.) that are committed, the offending players’ team will
(AND SHOULD) eliminate themselves from active play by giving the non-offending team ½ ice to recover from the
infraction. In this “spirit of the game” environment, it is expected that all players cooperate with each other and work in
uniform to keep a fun and friendly atmosphere on the ice.
7. Major Penalties: The off-ice game monitor will have the discretion to eject a team or player should a penalty be flagrant
and/or a team is consistently playing in a reckless manner. Any major penalty, which includes any action that could
possibly injure another player, will result in that player being ejected from the game. Abuse of the off-ice game monitor will
be considered a major penalty. This includes yelling, swearing, or arguing at the off-ice game monitor. The team that
received the ejection will play the remainder of the game short-handed (2 vs 3). Off-ice pond official will determine major
penalties. Any player(s) ejected from a game is suspended from the league until further notice from the league manager.
8. Body contact and checking is NOT permitted. Such action that was inadvertent will result in a minor penalty unless the
intent is deemed serious enough to be a major penalty (see “#7. Major Penalties”).
9.
NO SLAPSHOTS ARE ALLOWED. Such action will result in a player being removed from the game immediately and
the team will play the remainder of the game short-handed (2 vs 3). Saucer passes (i.e. pucks that are lifted low, below
the knee) are acceptable. Saucer passes above the knee will result in a loss of possession and a ½ ice re-start.
10. Goaltending: Goaltending, goalie equipment and goalie sticks are not permitted. Players “defending” the goal may
only do so while moving through the area and shall not “camp out” in front of the goal. For safety, players cannot fall or
lay on the ice in an effort to protect the goal area. Such action will result in a minor penalty.
11. If a puck goes out of bounds, the last team to touch it loses possession (except from a deflection). During the re-start,
the offending team must give the opponent ½ ice before re-engaging.
12. Goals must be scored from the attacking side of center ice. Teams must give their opponents ½ ice after a goal is
scored before re-engaging.
13. Games will be composed of a running time of two 15-minute halves with a 2-minute halftime. Regular season games
will end in a tie. Tournament games will consist of 5-minute sudden death over-times until a team scores.
14. Substitutions can only be made during stoppages of play or during a situation in which play is being “re-started” (i.e.
after a goal, after a minor infraction, or when a puck is being put back into play). It is up to each team to ensure that there
are only three players on the ice at any time.

Collectors and local sports fans have the chance to own items from a private collection of Cincinnati Gardens. We hope they will find eternal homes to good buyers who may preserve these icons for they represent a lot of Cincinnati’s history in sports, especially ice hockey.

Cincinnati-based online estate sale company “Everything But The House” launched an auction of more than 500 items from the now retired 67-year-old venue. The sale, hosted on ebth.com, begins today, Monday August 15, 2016 and runs through Aug. 21, 2016.

The sale includes team jerseys from the Cincinnati Mohawks, Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and Cincinnati Cyclones, a 1953 Mohawks Governor’s Championship Trophy from the International Hockey League, a 1950s Mohawks hockey puck, vintage sports equipment, and original ticket stubs and programs. Many of the auction items have been on display at the Gardens’ “Legends Museum.” All items start at a $1 bid.

Private collector Dave Greene decided to auction the items because the Gardens’ new owner, the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority, plans to demolish the facility.

You can start bidding now at https://www.ebth.com/sales/15038-the-cincinnati-gardens-museum/categories

The fees per team for all teams are $1,900 if paid in full by the start of the second game. ($2,100 if not paid in full by the second game. Due to the Gardens closing, space is VERY limited this season!
